Long-Term Dredged Material Management Strategy with Emphasis on Beneficial Use

Category: Submerged, Intertidal, and Wetland

Cost: Information not provided.

Description: The Tampa Bay Estuary Program contracted with the Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, to develop a long-term dredged material management strategy for Tampa Bay. The strategy, completed in August 2000, examines disposal needs for the next twenty-five years, available capacities in existing disposal areas, shortfalls in capacity, and beneficial use options.

Outcome: The completed strategy reveals a shortfall in capacity, between years 2000-2025, of 15,300,000 cubic yards in the existing confined disposal areas in the bay. No shortfalls in capacity are projected for the offshore disposal area, beach placement, or other beneficial uses. The study further identifies a need for more complete information on most of the potential beneficial use options.
