Tampa Bay
Adoption
of Goals to Restore Historical Balance of Wetlands
Category: Wetland
Cost: An average of $50,000/acre
Description: As a major program goal, Tampa Bay Estuary Program
partners are striving to restore the historical balance between tidal wetlands
and low-salinity wetlands. The specific goals are to restore 100 acres of
oligohaline wetlands every five years and 1800 acres over time.
Outcome: For the period 1995-1999, Tampa Bay Estuary Program
partners restored 250 acres of low salinity wetlands, exceeding the five-year
goal by 150 percent. The 1340 acres of mangrove and salt marsh habitat restored
over the same period add significantly to the 18,800 acres of those habitats
found in the Tampa Bay system.
