San Francisco Estuary

Watershed Science Approach

Category:  Wetland and Upland.

Cost:  Variable

Description:  Based upon the success of the Bay Area Wetlands Ecosystem Goals Project, the approach of developing a strong, shared understanding of local landscape change as a basis for prioritizing restoration and management activities is now being extended into local watersheds. The approach includes an intensive field-based assessment of geomorphic processes determining the movement of water in sediment through the system, and an assessment of land use history and resulting landscape change using historical ecological research techniques.

Outcome:  The approach has been tested in several Bay Area watersheds and been successful in helping agencies understand how the present-day ecosystem is adjusting to historical and recent land use activities, and the implications for restoration.
