Sarasota Bay
Upgrade
Wastewater Treatment Plants
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: $100,000,000
Description: Wastewater treatment plants would be upgraded
within the Sarasota Bay region to include advanced waste treatment capabilities
with re-use systems in an effort to reduce pollution and nitrogen loads. The
increased level of wastewater treatment would produce water that could be used
as reclaimed water for golf courses and agricultural uses. The goal is to reduce
the amount of wastewater the ultimately ends up in the bay.
Outcome: Upgrading the wastewater treatment plants within the
Sarasota Bay region produced a 35 percent reduction in nitrogen loading (project
#16).
