Sarasota Bay
Storm
Water Retrofit
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: + $30 million
Description: The project goal was to retrofit storm water within
priority watersheds to reduce nitrogen loads and pollution. The project entailed
installing large regional storm treatment systems (large man-made lakes) to
serve as retention centers to catch and retain water in the upper reaches of
the watershed. The water would be treated before it was allowed to flow to the
lower part of the watershed.
Outcome: The results of this project were that 1-2 percent of
the nitrogen load has been reduced. The Phillippi Creek watershed, a large watershed
that had the largest load from a creek, has been 90 percent completed. Other
watershed areas, such as Hudson Bayou, will be completed in the next few years.
