Mussel Removal from Clam Flats

Category: Intertidal

Cost: $18, 494 NHEP; $12,000 UNH

Description: Mussels colonized the clam flats in Hampton/Seabrook Harbor during a period of no recreational clamming, creating extensive mats that smother clams in underlying sediments. A mussel dredge was developed and two-thirds of the mussels removed.

Outcome: Removing mussels can enhance clam recruitment and result in improved substrate textural characteristics.
