Lower Columbia River Estuary
Selection and Implementation of Habitat Restoration Based on Target Species
Category: Submerged, Intertidal,
Wetland, and Upland
Cost: Congress authorized but did not appropriate $15 million to USACE
to implement the CCMP habitat restoration projects.
Description: Because of the ESA listing for 12 salmonid species that
pass through the estuary, there is a major push on to implement projects to
preserve and restore salmonid habitat. Unfortunately, the decision process is
very limited by poor data on salmonid use of estuary. Research work is on going
but the time frame long. We hope to use criteria developed at workshop to better
assess proposed projects and to help make more informed decisions about where
projects need to occur. The Partnership is working with its partners to develop
a list of possible projects.
Outcome: The selection and implementation of habitat restoration projects
that are based on the needs of target species such as salmonids as well as ecosystem
needs.
