Indian River Lagoon
Shoreline
Restoration Program
Category: Intertidal and Wetland
Cost: ~ $60,000/year
Description: Planting of shoreline vegetation to restore barren
shorelines. Mangroves have been planted and monitored at more than 30 sites
throughout the Indian River Lagoon. The mangroves were planted using PVC encasements
(pipe) on moderate- to high-energy shorelines. The encasements were used to
protect against plant loss until the plants were established.
Outcome: This project provides a number of benefits; including
habitat restoration, public involvement, and public education.
