Indian River Lagoon

Restoration of Dragline Ditches

Category:  Intertidal and Wetland

Cost:  $100,000

Description:  Restoration of dragline ditches that are cut through marshes. The dragline ditches will be used for mosquito control. For this project, an excavator, mounted on a marsh buggy, was used to restore the marshes by replacing the spoil in the ditches.

Outcome:  The construction of dragline ditches through marshes and the deposition of spoil on adjacent wetlands changed the hydrology and character of many of the marshes in the Indian River Lagoon. This project is on-going; to date approximately 50 acres have been restored.
