Acquisition of Privately Owned Marshes/Mosquito Impoundments

Cost: $ 50,000/year contract with the Nature Conservancy
Description: The Indian River Lagoon Blueway project is a program
to acquire privately owned wetlands adjacent to the Indian River Lagoon.
Outcome: Through the Indian River Lagoon project, all five
counties, both water management districts and the Nature Conservancy, have joined
to identify and acquire privately owned wetlands along the Indian River Lagoon.
More than 500 parcels consisting of more than 8,000 acres have been identified
for acquisition. To date, several of the parcels have been acquired and the
Nature Conservancy has been hired to negotiate acquisition of additional parcels
with property owners.
