Charlotte Harbor
CONTROL PROPELLER DAMAGE AND INVASIVE EXOTIC PLANTS
Category:
Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: unknown
Description: Various priority actions listed in the CCMP pertain to public
education and outreach to help alleviate seagrass scarring and aid in the removal
of exotic species. There is also discussion on creating a uniform signage program
that would demarcate seagrass beds, bird rookeries and turtle nesting areas in
the Charlotte Harbor watershed to help protect important habitats.
Two goals in the CCMP pertain to habitat management approaches:
Reduce propeller damage to seagrass beds, identified from the 1992-1993 baseline
data, within the Charlotte Harbor NEP area by the year 2010. Reduce all severely
scarred areas to light scarring and reduce 70 percent or more of the moderately
scarred areas to light scarring.
On conservation, preservation, stewardship, and other public lands achieve controllable
levels of invasive exotic plants as defined by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council
by the year 2020. Encourage and support the removal and management of invasive
exotic plants on private lands.
Outcome: This project has not yet been completed.
