Casco Bay

Description:  The GIS habitat analysis identifies high value habitat for species of estuarine importance in the Casco Bay watershed. 

Outcome:  It has been used to stimulate a variety of land protection initiatives including the following:

1)  Guide development of land use plans in towns surrounding Casco Bay (i.e., Freeport, Nath Yarmouth).

2)  Provide information on important habitats to all town land trusts and town planners to support future land protection initiatives.

3) Establish Casco Bay Important Habitats Opportunity Fund, to support land protection initiatives in the Casco Bay watershed conducted by land trusts, towns, and other conservation groups.  The Fund has helped support the following protection initiatives:  Holt Bog, Bridgeton; Mill Creek Preserve, Falmouth; Presumpscot River Preserve, Portland (pending); Truffant Farm, Hapswell (pending); and Florida Lakes, Freeport (pending).
