Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program
Support the Development of a Local Land Trust
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: $ 150,000
Description: During the development of the Coastal Bend Bays
Plan, the CBBEP Management Conference called for the establishment of a locally
administered Land Trust for the purpose of habitat protection. During FY1999
and FY2000, the CBBEP provided the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation with funds
to develop business and financial strategic plans, and workshops and literature
to support the Coastal Bend Land Trust (CBLT). The purpose of this project
is to acquire property/conservation easements along the Oso Creek area, to
preserve habitat, maintain open space, and ensure watershed and water quality
protection.
The Coastal Bend Land Trust will work in coordination with the City of Corpus
Christi to identify land in the Oso Creek and Oso Bay area that could be acquired
for the purpose of conservation and habitat protection. While the majority
of the funds will be spent for land/easement acquisition along the Oso Creek
and Oso Bay corridor, one-third of the funds will be dedicated to support
the land trust program development, community outreach, and materials production.
The Coastal Bend Land Trust will be requested to find at least a one-to-one
match for both program development and habitat acquisition funding. They will
be strongly encouraged to identify even greater matching funds.
Outcome: Site identification and prioritization will be completed
in January 2001. A draft summary report should be completed by August 2001,
with the final summary report completed in September 2001.
