Tampa Bay

Establish Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) of Nitrogen for Tampa Bay

Category: Submerged

Cost: $ 1.7 million/year

Description: Achieving Tampa Bay Estuary Program's seagrass restoration goal of 12,350 acres is predicated upon holding the line on future nitrogen loading to the bay. The nitrogen loading cap adopted by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program became the basis for the nitrogen TMDL established by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) subsequently approved by USEPA.

Outcome: The TMDL adopted by FDEP has been superceded by the Florida Waterhshed Restoration Act that established a new process for designating impaired waters and for setting and allocating TMDLs. However, EPA Region 4 is still using the original TMDL it approved for Tampa Bay in its review of NPDES point source permits.
