San Francisco Estuary
History,
Maps, and Watersheds
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: $35,000
Description: It was recognized that the regional science planning
effort and its extension into local watersheds had produced never-before-available
information about local landscape change, which could be of potential value
to local education. In collaboration with the Center for EcoLiteracy, the
San Francisco Estuary Institute recruited a team of local teachers to help
guide the translation of project data into useful materials for the classroom
setting. This resulted in the development of packages of laminated maps designed
to help visualize how the watershed surrounding each school has changed through
time. Materials included early Spanish maps, geo-referenced early paintings
and photographs, a modern aerial photographic base map, and maps showing change-through-time.
The information was extremely popular with the teachers and students, and
has been successfully tested in local classrooms. While of obvious social
value, the effort is time-intensive for scientists and would benefit from
an intermediary educational organization.
Outcome: The project has been quite successful as a test case
in the Wildcat Creek Watershed, receiving a Friends of the Estuary Award for
implementation of the Estuary Project CCMP goals.
