Citizen Water Group

Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland

Cost: Minimal

Description: The goal is to develop a self-sustaining group that will eventually recruit and train new members that can assist regulatory agencies with violations. The volunteers would be trained to understand and recognize sediment/erosion, wetlands, submerged aquatic vegetation, forestry, and other violations. The trained members could then report violations they find to the responding agency.

Outcome: To date, approximately ten citizen volunteers have been trained. There several items that are needed to improve the group's organization and success. The group needs a good leader; it needs to meet monthly to discuss violations and previous violations, and it needs volunteers who are active and "out and about." Even with these organizational problems, this group is recommended for all NEPs.
