Innovative Characterization and Management Approaches
Across the NEP Experience

Morro Bay

Volunteer Center

Category:  Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland

Cost:  Less than $5,000 set up; about $6,000 per year to operate.

Description:  The MBNEP leased approximately 500 square feet of space (in addition to the visitor information center cited earlier) and offered it for use by non-profits working on conservation in the estuary and watershed. Many smaller non-profits do not have offices and lack basic work stations and equipment. The volunteer space provides these groups with two computer work stations, filing cabinets, storage cabinets and book shelves, a small conference room and access to phones and fax machines. The center is considered a success; several of the local volunteer groups have taken advantage of the offer and are using the space for one or more activities.

Outcome:  Considering the number of groups taking advantage of the space and the strengthening of relations between these groups and the MBNEP that has resulted from this measure of goodwill and capacity building, this approach is recommended for future/different applications.
