Morro Bay

Capacity Building Among Local Non-profits - "Estero Conservation Alliance"

Category:  Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland

Cost:  $8,000 per year for publications

Description:  Working with the Morro Bay Friends of the Estuary, the MBNEP has helped to create an "alliance" or consortium of non-profits working throughout the watershed. The purpose of the consortium is to provide mutual support, coordination among activities and conservation projects, and capacity building. The group meets semi-annually with monthly "fax updates" among members. An annual publication "For the Common Good" highlights the work of the member organizations and encourages volunteerism from the community. Additional publications include newspaper inserts regarding conservation efforts and an estuary guide map that highlights the conservation work of the member groups (in production).

Outcome:  The effort has improved coordination among the conservation groups, and built a new level of trust among these groups with the MBNEP.  The efficacy of the publications on volunteerism is still being assessed.
