San Juan Bay
Creel Survey
Type: Extent of
habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline); condition
of habitat and sources affecting habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality
of the habitat); and stressors affecting habitat (i.e., which sources
have contributed to its degradation and whether they are direct or indirect
factors).
Category: Submerged
Cost: $60,000
Description: A creel survey was developed to determine fishing effort,
harvest, fish and shellfish species composition in order to estimate the magnitude
of recreational fisheries (via questionaires) and to establish a benchmark for
future quantitative and possibly qualitative studies in the San Juan Bay Estuary
system. Biological data such as frequency of catch, compared frequency of catch,
length frequency, length-weight relationship and seasonality of catch were also
noted.
Outcome: The study provided other valuable information, among it, angler
demographics, economic data. The need for regulating navigation, especifically
jet skis, was a special concern informed by those interviewed in the survey,
information that served as a basis for the inclusion in the SJBE CCMP of an
action plan regarding this issue.
