Puget Sound
Oblique
Shoreline Photography on the Internet
Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether
there has been a decline); condition of habitat and sources affecting
habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality of the habitat); and stressors
affecting habitat (i.e., which sources have contributed to its degradation
and whether they are direct or indirect factors).
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: Unknown
Description: Between 1992 and 1997, the state acquired oblique
aerial photography of the state's entire 2,500 miles of marine shoreline.
These photographs have been digitally reproduced and made easily available
through the Internet to any user. Users can access digital images
of the shoreline, zoom in or out on the images and -select from a menu of
significant or special features. The collection of over 10,000 photographs
provides a valuable educational monitoring tool for coastal managers and the
public. The true-color photos comprise a continuous series, panning left to
right along the shoreline. The photos were taken to optimize sun angle, shoreline
orientation, and low tides. Oblique photos are useful for interpreting bluff
geology and land-sliding, riparian vegetation, and shoreline modifications
such as bulkheads and seawalls.
Outcome: Effective planning and education tool for local and
state resource managers and land use planners.
