Indian River Lagoon
Seagrass Mapping
Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat
and whether there has been a decline) and condition of habitat and
sources affecting habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality of the habitat).
Category: Submerged
Cost: $ 70,000 - 100,000
Description: The study entails the acquisition and interpretation
of aerial photography of the Indian River Lagoon to determine the location
and extent of seagrass acreage. Project has been repeated every two-three
years.
Outcome: Results of the study include the production of large-scale
GIS-based maps of seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon. The maps are used for
comparison against historic data and past seagrass maps to determine trends.
The most recent mapping project was paid for by the National Marine Fisheries
Service.
