Lower Columbia River Estuary
Habitat Models
Type: Extent of
habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline); condition
of habitat and sources affecting habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality
of the habitat); and stressors affecting habitat (i.e., which sources
have contributed to its degradation and whether they are direct or indirect
factors).
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: Information not provided.
Description: The CCMP stayed away from models and forecasting. With the
recent Endangered Species Act listings for salmonids, however, there is new
push from federal level to model elements of the Columbia River system. The
Estuary Partnership will support the efforts of NMFS and USACE to develop habitat
models: Examples include: 1) the relationship of salmonids to the Col R plume
using conceptual model of the relationship between estuarine conditions and
fish populations, and 2) physical model of Col R plume to characterize potential
changes to estuarine habitat associated with affects of hydropower system
Outcome: It is hoped the models will improve our understanding of juvenile
salmonid use of the estuary and their habitat needs.
