Analysis of Historic Seagrass Aerial Photos and Maps

Type:  Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline).

Category:  Submerged

Cost:  $80,000/year

Description:  This study assessed the changes in seagrass over time using aerial photographs and GIS maps. Photointerpretation of aerial photographs of seagrass extent from 1950, 1982, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, and 1999 have been used to estimate changes in aerial extent of seagrass over time. Information gathered from photos was also compared to GIS maps of the area.

Outcome:  Results of this study were extremely important to the Tampa Bay Estuary Program in setting restoration goals and tracking progress towards those goals.
