Data Mining of USACE's Jurisdictional Determinations

Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline).

Category: Wetland

Cost: Time employed on research. This could be easily accomplished by a student through an internship.

Description: As part of the permit applications submitted to the USACE for the filling and dredging of wetlands and navigable waters under Section 404 of the US Clean Water Act, a Jurisdictional Determination (JD) is required. The JD includes information such as species composition, wetland coverage, hydrology and soil type.

Outcome: The data gathered from the USACE, in addition to other literature reviewed such as Environmental Impacts Assessments and Statements, and including some field trips, was summarized in a publication listing the flora (wetland, endemic and endangered species) and fauna (birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes) of the San Juan Bay Estuary.
