Puget Sound
Salmon and Steelhead Inventory and Assessment
Program (SSHIAP)
Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat
and whether there has been a decline); condition of habitat
and sources affecting habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality
of the habitat); and stressors affecting habitat (i.e.,
which sources have contributed to its degradation and whether
they are direct or indirect factors).
Category: Submerged, Intertidal, Wetland, and Upland
Cost: Unknown
Description: The program is an information system to characterize
freshwater and estuary habitat conditions and distribution of
salmon stocks in Washington at the 1:24,000 scale. The SSHIAP
system integrates a wide variety of habitat information derived
from USGS maps and GIS coverages, aerial photographs, field surveys,
existing databases, historical records, and the expertise of tribal,
state, and other biologists.
Stored within a Microsoft ACCESS database, the information can
be queried and analyzed according to user-defined criteria. The
database will be updated over time, and information can be retrieved
by basin, watershed, individual tributary, or species.
The program is designed to support regulatory, conservation,
and analysis efforts such as Washington State Watershed Analysis,
State Salmon Recovery, Habitat Conservation Planning, Ecosystem
Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT), and others.
Outcome: The database has been developed for many
watersheds within the state, including much of the Puget Sound
estuary basin.
