Maryland Coastal Bays
Aerial Survey of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat
and whether there has been a decline).
Category: Submerged
Cost: $1,000/flight
Description: Aerial flights were used for annual
mapping of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds in the coastal
bays to determine the damage caused by boating activities and
hydraulic dredging.
Outcome: The project was very successful, with no
constraints, and is recommended for future application. The results
show that SAV is increasing but hydraulic dredging is impacting
the health of the beds.
