San Juan Bay
Side-Scan Sonar
Type: Extent
of habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline).
Category: Submerged
Cost: $150,000
Description: The spatial distribution of benthic communities,
the area extent, the species composition and density within the
San Juan Bay Estuary was obtained from data collected by the use
of a side-scan sonar. Ground truthing was used to check the accuracy
of the interpretation. A benthic community map of the system will
be developed from the benthic community spatial distribution data.
Outcome: Software bugs of all sorts in the various programs
used to navigate, acquire and process the sonar data significantly
impact the project's productivity. These problems were eventually
solved. A final report is expected by late July 2001.
