Morro Bay
Volunteer Monitoring Program
Type: Stressors affecting habitat (i.e.,
which sources have contributed to its degradation and whether
they are direct or indirect factors).
Category: Submerged and Intertidal.
Cost: Up to $200,000 per year
Description: The MBNEP, with the cooperation of
the California Water Quality Control Board, has developed an extensive
volunteer monitoring program that samples a wide variety of pollutants
in the watershed and estuary. The monitoring program also measures
increases in habitats such as riparian forests, wetlands and eelgrass
beds. The project has involved over a hundred volunteers at different
times; the program includes regular training. Data is used as
part of the larger Water Board monitoring program which serves
as a model for other coastal watersheds. The project was initially
supported as an APDP with follow-up funding through a Section
319 grant.
Outcome: High quality data integrated into Regional
Board's professional staff's monitoring efforts; engagement of
many volunteers in the watershed.
