Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program

Water Quality Monitoring Phases II & III

Type:  Condition of habitat and sources affecting habitat (i.e., the condition or functionality of the habitat) and stressors affecting habitat (i.e., which sources have contributed to its degradation and whether they are direct or indirect factors).

Category:  Submerged

Cost:  $ 125,333 (Phase II); $ 100,000 (Phase III)

Description: The project is organized into three phases. Phase I included development, design, and initial implementation of a statistically powerful water quality monitoring plan through the partnering efforts of state and federal agencies and stakeholders. Phase II encompassed completion of the first year monitoring program and analysis of monitoring results. Sampling included routine field, chemical, and total and dissolved metal parameters. Phase III will be the continuation of the water quality monitoring of the project area, utilizing recommendations and conclusions obtained through analysis of results of Phase I and II of this project to design long term water quality monitoring areas and objectives.

In 1999 and 2000, Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries (CBBEP) supported efforts to provide an intensive, targeted water quality monitoring and assessment of Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, Corpus Christi Inner Harbor, and Aransas Pass. In 2001, CBBEP will focus surface water quality monitoring efforts in the Upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay areas.

Outcome:  Combining the sampling area of the FY2000 and FY2001 water quality monitoring projects provides statistically powerful data coverage from the entire coastal waters of the CBBEP area. The data will provide sufficient baseline information to adequately characterize and assess current water quality condition of CBBEP estuarine systems and will provide a measurement for determining the overall health of the ecosystem.
