Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats

Type: Extent of habitat (i.e., area of habitat and whether there has been a decline).

Category: Submerged

Cost: Information not provided.

Description: The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in cooperation with the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed a digital Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats data layer to enhance planning, siting, and impact analysis in areas proposed by NC WRC as being critical due to the presence of endangered or threatened aquatic species populations and the tributaries and headwaters of their habitats for statewide NC.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission provides data as field notes. Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats (stream features) are identified on a computer screen by a WRC representative. Identified hydrographic features are copied by a CGIA analyst to another coverage with all attributes maintained. Other layers of information are overlaid onto the hydrographic linework to check identified locations.

Outcome: Arc coverage depicting the extent of endangered or threatened aquatic species populations and the tributaries and headwaters of their habitats as identified by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The arc attribute table (AAT) has data including linear feature identifiers, length of linear feature in meters, two internal identification numbers, and seven attributes that were taken directly from the Hydrography 1:100,000- scale data layer. These include DLG standard codes for hydrographic features, DEM stream classification numbers and name, the name of the river basin in which the stream is found, and a CGIA feature maintenance code.
