ANEP: Mobile BayThe Mobile Bay National Estuary Program’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan was approved on April 22, 2002.

The plan, developed by citizens representing all sectors of our coastal Alabama community, contains dozens of actions to address water quality, habitat loss, and living resources as well as promoting education and public involvement. Our communities are making substantial progress in implementing the plan but much work remains as our region seeks a balance between coastal growth and economic development and maintaining environmental quality.

The identified challenges facing our estuary include:

  • managing storm water run-off and its contribution to water quality impairments
  • the acceleration of erosion and sedimentation in area waterways
  • land- use practices and habitat loss and fragmentation
  • maintaining thriving aquatic communities that support commercial and recreational fishing
  • mitigating the environmental and economic impact of physical alterations to our waterways
  • reducing the impacts of coastal growth and urban sprawl on the estuary
  • promoting environmental education and public involvement
