Insights on the NEPs - Delaware
Inland Bays
Rapid
development and intensive agriculture in a burgeoning coastal
resort area threaten Delaware's Inland Bays (Rehoboth Bay. Indian
River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay). To help address eutrophication
and habitat degradation issues, the Center for the Inland Bays
has established the James Farm Ecological Preserve, a 150-acre
Sussex County owned property, which is leased as an outdoor
learning, recreation, and demonstration project area.
The program
is also investigating harmful algal blooms, causes of finfish
mortality, and agricultural "best management practices."
Recently, the program initiated a Tributary Strategy Program
involving groups of stakeholders who have recommended pollution
control strategies in response to Total Maximum Daily Load
(TMDL) requirements for the Inland Bays. In addition, the
Center is restoring local shellfish populations and bay grasses;
planting trees and shrubs to buffer stream banks from nutrient
pollution; and, examining the amount of nutrients contributed
to the watershed from atmospheric deposition.
